BEGINNING THE LAST JOURNEY
The contemporary Korean Charnel House is commonly located within city or local hospitals. The deceased passes directly from their last bed to their last rites.

Traditionally a person would die at home surrounded by family, and be given last rites and be prepared to burial in the home’s Madang (inner garden).

Having been removed from the home, perhaps it is unlikely that palliative care can realistically be extricated from a hospital environment. Equally the psychological and atmospheric requirements of the rituals surrounding last rites are difficult to realise within the homogeneity of the hospital.

As such, the typology of Charnel House at home and in Madang has been formed within the Arcade - giving a place to bear witness, to pay ones respects, and to prepare the body of the deceased for their Last Journey.
