AROUND THE CITY, INTO THE MOUNTAIN

Once the occupation of the Charnel House is over, and the body has been prepared for travel, it is taken on procession around places that have some connection to the deceased. Historically this would have started at the home, going onto their place of occupation and perhaps property they owned.

It is much the same in contemporary Korea, favoured places from the life of the departed are visited, allowing the context of space to be added in the bereaved reconfigured autobiography.

Though compliance with this ritual is still strong it is timeful elements such as this that are often lost in the formation of a modern ritual.

As such, its premise is given a permanent form within the route taken by the bereaved through the Arcade. This path from Charnel House up to the Promession House circumnavigates the Arcade itself, round the the city, up into the mountain. The reconfiguration of peripheral occupation and juxtaposition of memorial within the day to day gifts the Last Journey to everyone.
